Paper Reviews
To improve the liveliness of in-class discussion of papers on the
list, please bring written reviews of papers to be discussed to
each lecture according to the schedule below. Reviews must be
submitted via learn@uw by 11am on the day specified below in the course schedule.
Each review will count equally. Make sure your written review addresses the following five points, and be prepared to present your points orally during the in-class discussion. For some papers, not each of the five points is relevant; simply state that in your review (for example, a survey paper may not have any original contributions).
NOTE: Please label each of the five sections in your review, and format your review so it is easy to read.
- Summary
In two or three sentences, summarize the content of the paper.
Use your own words; do not simply copy or restate the abstract.
- Original contribution(s)
Identify the original contributions made in the paper, whether
actual or claimed. It is generally a good idea to check at least
some of the references to verify claims of originality.
- Critique
Identify weaknesses in the paper, including faulty premises,
inadequate or missing references to prior work, factual errors, false
claims, poor experimental method, inadequate or incorrect presentation
and analysis of results, etc.
- Future work
Identify one or more interesting questions left unanswered in the
paper. What are the next one or two experiments that should be performed
to answer these questions? How would you go about constructing these
experiments?
- Exam question
Write a short discussion exam question based on this reading.
